Storm Information

...STORM INFORMATION...
A SERIES OF PACIFIC STORMS ARE LIKELY TO IMPACT CALIFORNIA AND NEVADA BEGINNING SUNDAY AND LASTING THROUGH NEXT WEEK. THE STORMS WILL BE DRIVEN ACROSS THE PACIFIC BY A STRONG JET STREAM WITH WINDS OVER 200 MPH AND A COLD LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM IN THE GULF OF ALASKA.

DUE TO THE UNUSUALLY FAST UPPER LEVEL WINDS...THE TIMING AND STRENGTH OF EACH SYSTEM IS UNCERTAIN. COMPUTER FORECAST MODELS CONTINUE TO BRING WAVES OF MOISTURE INTO THE SIERRA AND WESTERN NEVADA EVERY 24 HOURS. THE FIRST STORM LATE SUNDAY AFTERNOON INTO MONDAY...THE SECOND TUESDAY INTO EARLY WEDNESDAY...AND THE STRONGEST AND COLDEST SYSTEM WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY

....SNOW ACCUMULATIONS...
OVER THE WEEK LONG PERIOD...SIGNIFICANT PRECIPITATION IS LIKELY IN THE SIERRA WITH LESSER AMOUNTS IN THE WESTERN NEVADA VALLEYS. SNOW LEVELS SHOULD START AT 5500 TO 6000 FEET LATE SUNDAY THEN DROP TO 5000 TO 5500 FEET BY MONDAY...AND FINALLY TO 4500 FEET OR LESS BY TUESDAY. SEVERAL FEET OF SNOW IS LIKELY IN THE SIERRA NEXT WEEK...WITH SNOW ACCUMULATIONS ON THE WESTERN NEVADA VALLEY FLOORS BY MID TO LATE WEEK....

...WINDS...
STRONG WINDS ARE EXPECTED OVER THE RIDGES WITH EACH WEATHER SYSTEM...ESPECIALLY THROUGH MOUNTAIN PASSES AND IN PORTIONS OF WESTERN NEVADA. SIERRA RIDGE GUSTS OVER 100 MPH ARE NOT OUT OF THE QUESTION...WITH GUSTS ABOVE 40 MPH IN THE WESTERN NEVADA VALLEYS. THE BEST CHANCE FOR STRONG WINDS IS ON MONDAY...AND AGAIN WEDNESDAY INTO THURSDAY.

...TRAVEL IMPACTS...
THE COMBINATION OF SNOW AND WIND IN THE SIERRA MAY PRODUCE SIGNIFICANT TRAVEL DELAYS AND PERIODIC ROAD CLOSURES WEDNESDAY AND THURSDAY. PERIODS OF BLIZZARD LIKE CONDITIONS WITH LOW VISIBILITIES ARE LIKELY NEXT WEEK IN THE SIERRA. AIR TRAVEL INTO AND OUT OF THE RENO AIRPORT MAY BE IMPACTED BY PERIODS OF STRONG WINDS AND/OR SNOW.
